CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Summer is almost here, and the Charleston County Public Library and the Charleston County School District are working together to help students and children read more than ever.
This joint initiative is part of the library’s annual “Summer Reading” program, which provides incentives for reading during the summer months.
Summer Reading features a fantastic lineup of free virtual online events and programs, outdoor programs as well as fun prizes.
“Summer Reading is the perfect time to read for fun while keeping students engaged,” CCPL Executive Director Angela Craig said. “CCPL has always been a partner in educational success, with our Summer Reading program our way to help fight the summer slide.”

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The family of a girl diagnosed with autism is suing the Charleston County School District for failing to accompany their daughter to a bathroom, where she was then photographed by other students.
The lawsuit states that the family of an 8th grader with autism had organized an Individual Education Plan with the CCSD.
According to the family, that plan specified that their daughter required adult supervision when she went to the restroom.

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCSC) - Parents of seniors at Wando High School are calling on the Charleston County School District to expand the number of people who can come to graduation.
More than 930 students will get their diplomas outside at the Wando High School Stadium next month, but they can only bring three guests to the ceremony.

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) Growing up on James Island, Jacinta Bryant understood the value of education at a young age.
Every morning on her way to school, Bryant’s mother would drive her past McLeod Plantation. She would watch as the white houses, formerly occupied by slaves, went by her window.
“My mom always said to me when we passed by, ‘You know what? Your ancestors were killed and severely beaten just because they wanted to learn to read and write,’” Bryant, who is Black, said. “‘There were grave consequences for them, but those consequences should be placed in a positive light for you. I want you to build from that foundation.’”

Many teachers argued that the timing of the action had put them in a difficult and frustrating position because they were required to sign their contracts just a day before the change was announced.
