Albany, N.Y. - Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay believes the Assembly Committee on Judiciary, who is working on the impeachment proceedings against Governor Cuomo, are dragging their heels.
Barclay says with all the alarming stories outlining misconduct have emerged almost daily, the Committee has held only two public meetings neither of which mentioned any specifics, and another meeting hasn’t even been scheduled according to Barclay.
Barclay said unless things improve regarding the pace and progress, the direct approach of an up or down vote on impeachment may be the only thing able to produce a tangible result.
OSWEGO â Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay announced that he will host a blood drive with city of Oswego Mayor Billy Barlow to benefit the American Red Cross. The drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, May 7 at the Roy C. McCrobie Building at 41 Lake St., Oswego.
âThe Red Cross provides an amazing service with these community blood drives. My office is proud to partner with them and Mayor Barlow to help provide an opportunity for people to donate blood locally. The need for blood is particularly critical due to the restrictions and continued closures caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. My office is happy to help where we can,â said Leader Barclay.
Lawmakers proposed taking action Tuesday to improve the stateâs unemployment system as agencies battle record-high levels of fraudulent claims after millions of New Yorkers applied for benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic.
New York has paid roughly $724,000 in identity-theft related unemployment fraud to date in 2021 â already close to double its rate for all of 2020, according to the state Labor Department on Tuesday.
The state paid roughly $394,000 in identity-theft related unemployment fraud in 2020, up drastically due to the pandemic from $93,000 in 2019 and $30,000 in 2018. The figures do not include instances of other types of âsoftâ fraud, according to the department.
âThese fraud numbers include the identity theft numbers because during the pandemic, thatâs mostly what weâre seeing are these large fraud rings,â state labor Department Director of Communications Deanna Cohen said Tuesday. âIn previous years, the soft fraud would
Lawmakers disputed potential financial impacts on private adult-care facilities Tuesday before voting to require adequate numbers of nurses and all care staff in hospitals and congregate facilities under state law.
The Legislature continued reforms included in the 2021-22 budget Tuesday with the passage of A108-B/S1168-A to require all New York hospitals to meet certain staffing levels, maintaining a base nurse to patient ratio.
The measure passed unanimously 63-0 in the Senate.
The Legislature also voted 54-9 in the Senate and 125-25 in the Assembly to pass A7119/S6346, requiring nursing homes to establish minimum staffing standards and all patients receive an average of 3.5 hours of care each day.
CORRECTION: Due to a reporting error, an earlier version of this story incorrectly reported the number of unemployment identity-theft fraud cases that New York has responded to in 2021 as the amount paid in identity-theft related unemployment fraud. The number of cases remains nearly double the number of cases for all of 2020.
