NY Health Department, NY Police set to tackle gun violence

PUBLISHED 8:39 PM ET Jul. 07, 2021 PUBLISHED 8:39 PM EDT Jul. 07, 2021 SHARE In certain areas of New York, gun violence this year is at its highest level since the early 2000s. Over the Fourth of July weekend, 51 people were shot across New York state, compared to 13 people who died from COVID-19. For a state that was once considered the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic, Governor Andrew Cuomo says the state now needs to turn its attention to a different sort of epidemic. Cuomo on Tuesday declared a first of its kind state of emergency around gun violence and committed almost $139 million to addressing root causes that could have led to this rise in violence around the state.

Cuomo declares gun violence emergency

ALBANY – Calling worsening gun violence a criminal, economic and public health threat, especially in low-income, minority communities, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo Tuesday declared a “disaster emergency” to free up funds and programs for job creation and other opportunities aimed especially at at-risk youth. The Democratic governor signed legislation passed earlier this year by the Legislature to end-run a federal law that will now permit New Yorkers hurt by firearms to sue gun manufacturers if they can show that a “public nuisance” was created by the sale, importation or marketing of firearms in the state. Backers say it will make a major dent in gun violence while gun rights groups say it will push some gunmakers to halt sales in New York.
