Red Kettle Campaign Falls Short of Goal, Donations To Continue Through January

By Benjamin Cox on December 30, 2020 at 7:26am The Salvation Army’s 2020 Red Kettle campaign fell short of its goal during this calendar year. Jacksonville Salvation Army Major Charles Pinkston says that the campaign has fallen short of its goal both this year and last year. However, he says he’s pleased with the results in light of all that’s happened this year with COVID-19 turning everything upside-down: “We’ve had the same goal for the last couple of years. We’ve kept it at $80,000. So far, last year we brought in a total just under $75,000 and this year, total income this year for Christmas up through December 23rd was $64,170.64 and I believe on the final day we brought in another $3,000, which would put us right around $68,000 for the year. We’re about $12,000 short of our goal, which isn’t too bad considering everything that’s happened this year. We really didn’t know what to expect.”

Just a week ago the Salvation Army announced they had reached $160,000 towards their $180,000 goal through the annual campaign. That was thanks in part to a $30,000 matching donor. But now they’ve totaled all the donations through the Christmas holiday, and their new total is more than $281,000! Lt. Matt Winters says, in all, more than 900 people were helped over the holidays. “We were able to help 550 kids receive toys this year. We’re thankful to Toys for Tots for allowing us to help along with that. But then also just during this time we were able to help out with all the families receiving Christmas baskets.”  And it’s not too late to donate.

Chelsea Barnes, a lieutenant with the Salvation Army, said in a previous Garden City Telegram article that the campaign was more important this year than in previous years because there has been an increased awareness of the organization and its programs, and more people have been using its services, such as utility assistance and food assistance, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
