FLORENCE, Ala. (WAFF) - The Salvation Armyâs red kettle donations are down across the nation, but as the campaign wrapped up, that wasnât the case in the Shoals.
The Salvation Army of the Shoalsâ mission this year is to ârescue Christmasâ And they did just that through the Red Kettle Campaign!
The campaign has exceeded its $150,000 goal.
The campaign had two matches, one from an anonymous donor and one from the Salvation Army executive board.
They also had a virtual kettle which which raised closed to $14,000.
Johnston just completed his 20th season ringing the bell.
Major David Worthy says Johnston has spent at least 6,000 hours at the red kettle, raising more than $200,000 over two decades. He is an absolute inspiration to us. We love Jamie. He s one of our own. The Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign would not be what it is in the South Plains without Jamie, Worthy said.
He provides more hours than any other individual or group in our area.
This season alone, his kettle has raised more than $15,000. He really, truly is a life-changer to people in need, Worthy praised.
Despite having cerebral palsy and being confined to a wheelchair, Johnston rings the bell full-time throughout the season.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. It s a sight and sound that s become synonymous with the Christmas holiday: the Salvation Army s red kettle donation baskets and festive bell ringers.
But like most things in 2020, the Red Kettle Campaign has taken on a different look because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Many of the volunteers who help the Salvation Army for raising funds, volunteering for Angel Tree donations, this year we didn’t have as many volunteers, Maj. Donald Dohmann, area commander with the Salvation Army told 13News Now on Christmas Eve.

Thanks to your generosity, the Salvation Army of La Crosse County reached its Red Kettle Campaign goal!
The pandemic caused a lot of concern that the organization wouldn’t raise as much money this year, but the community really stepped up.
“They heard the call, and there are so many of our neighbors and our friends that are in need. All the dollars that are raised stay local and go back out to the community. So, again we come to the community today to say thank you. You did it, you helped us reach our goal,” said Christina Knudsen, Salvation Army of La Crosse County Development Dir.

The Red Kettle Campaign wrapped up on Christmas Eve.
Shirley Ford was among the last bell ringers to work a shift on that day.
She was stationed at the Corner Market at Midtown.
She says she enjoys ringing the bell and meeting people who donate, even on cold days like Christmas Eve.
