NJ appeals court green lights Pinelands pipeline

A state Appellate Court on Thursday rejected an appeal by two environmental groups to halt construction of a natural-gas pipeline in South Jersey, saying there’s no evidence that the nearly complete project will hurt groundwater quality, damage endangered species or conflict with the principles that govern management of Pinelands preserve. The court dismissed arguments by the New Jersey Sierra Club and the Pinelands Preservation Alliance that the Pinelands Commission, which manages the region, was wrong in 2017 to approve the Southern Reliability Link a 30-mile New Jersey Natural Gas pipeline that runs east from Chesterfield to near Lakehurst.

Newark airport workers to get better pay, benefits under new N.J. law Updated Apr 29, 2021; Yvette Stephens lamented Thursday that for the last 16 months, she hasn’t been able to to afford health care to cover injections she needs for her multiple sclerosis treatment that can cost up to $1,000 a month. Stephens said she was denied Medicaid because she got a raise and made just $2 over the eligibility threshold. And like many of her fellow workers at Newark Liberty International Airport, she said, getting health coverage through her employer has been too expensive. “I live with multiple conditions, but without health care, what can I do?” asked Stephens, a security officer at the airport who said she also needs treatment for a lump in her throat.

By Janet Tauro An anticipated state Senate bill that would expand the process around warehouse development proposals in New Jersey might be the first step toward keeping the “garden” in the Garden State. The bill, as first reported by NJ Spotlight, was expected to be introduced in late April by state Senate President Stephen Sweeney and would involve neighboring municipalities in a hearing process where the warehouse development is proposed. From one end of New Jersey to another, urban, suburban, farm and forest communities have been walloped with warehouse proposals, and community and environmental groups have punched back with strong opposition.
