April 19, 2021 By Jessica Mathews / news@whmi.com Changes regarding operations and maintenance of the City of Howell’s Scofield Park and boat launch facilities are nearly finalized for the coming season. City Council has been discussing planned changes to the City’s agreement with the Howell Area Parks and Recreation Authority (HAPRA), which manages the beach and boat launch. Due to the City’s challenging financial situation, it was determined there needed to be more financial sharing of the facilities by those outside of the Authority’s boundaries, as well as changes regarding the issuance of park permits. The new terms of the agreement call for one free season pass for all Authority households - which includes the City, Howell Township, Genoa Township, Marion Township, and Oceola Township. One additional pass for each Authority household can be purchased for $40. The cost for one season pass for all non-Authority household

WHMI 93 5 Local News : Witnesses Say Genoa Clerk Admitted Using Illegal Ballot Containers

April 15, 2021 By Jon King / jking@whmi.com The investigation that led to an election charge against longtime Genoa Township Clerk Polly Skolarus determined that unapproved canvas bags had been used to store excess absentee ballots used in the November election. A single, misdemeanor charge of Election Law - Failure to Perform Duty was filed against Skolarus last month following an investigation by Michigan State Police. A Freedom of Information Act request by WHMI turned over the 30-page police report and 45 additional pages of supporting documents. According to the report compiled by Detective Sgt. Michael Baker, multiple witnesses, including Livingston County Clerk Elizabeth Hundley, County Elections Coordinator Joe Bridgman, all four members of the Livingston County Board of Canvassers, Brighton Township Clerk Joe Riker, Green Oak Township Clerk Michael Sedlak, and Hamburg Township Deputy Clerk Mary Kuzner all stated they witnessed Skolarus an

WHMI 93 5 Local News : Water Tower In Genoa Township Getting Re-Painted

April 13, 2021 The water tower in Genoa Township is getting a makeover. The MHOG Utility Department announced that the Genoa Township MHOG water tower located on the campus of Cleary University will be re-painted. The project will involve the construction of containment around the tower so that contractors can sandblast the tower to bare metal for recoating. Residents will notice the tower going through several color coats as a primer, base coat, and ultimately the glossy finish coat are applied. Facing Grand River, the tower will have the Genoa Township logo, and facing the athletic fields, the Cleary University logo will be displayed. MHOG worked with the University and Genoa Township to develop an ultimate color scheme that officials say will look more attractive than the current tower color scheme. It is projected that once complete; the improved coating system will provide a 20-year useful life.
