Health Dept provides guidance as COVID restrictions ease

The Tompkins County Health Department is alerting the community to the easing of pandemic-related restrictions in New York State and the ongoing local efforts related to enforcing State guidance. Tompkins County continues to be a leader in New York State for both high vaccination rates and low infection rates, TCHD continues to urge the community to closely follow public health guidance related to the easing of restrictions and to get vaccinated when you are able.   New York State has announced that effective May 19, most business capacity restrictions will be based solely on 6 feet social distancing requirements.   Percentage-based capacity restrictions will be removed for most commercial settings, including retail, food services, gyms and fitness centers, amusement and family entertainment, hair salons, barber shops,  other personal care services, and houses of worship, among other settings.

Health Dept , Cayuga Health celebrate 50,000 vaccinations

Officials celebrated the 50,000 vaccinations administered in Tompkins County on April 29 with a ceremony outside of the mall vaccination clinic. “Congratulations to the Tompkins County Health Department, who has demonstrated through their collaboration with Cayuga Medical Systems what true partnership looks like,” said RoAnn Destito, commissioner of the New York State Office of General Services. “50,000 arms is a remarkable accomplishment.” Dr. Marty Stallone, president and CEO of Cayuga Health Systems, said that the operation would not have been possible without the full partnership between Cayuga Health and the county, which have worked together to provide free testing throughout the pandemic to all residents, as well as operating the mass vaccination site.

The achievement has allowed the university to continue classes by returning test results in 24-hours. This quick process has helped speed contract tracing and limit the spread of COVID on campus and into the community. Dr. Anthony Fauci M.D. ’66, chief medical adviser to President Biden and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, wrote a letter to congratulate the university on their milestone. Fauci wrote, “I understand that this accomplishment arose from Cornell’s commitment to the health and safety of its campus and came about after creation of a state-of-the-art testing program in collaboration with your community partners, Cayuga Medical Center and the Tompkins County Health Department.”
