2 Temple High seniors will vie in national competition

Two Temple High seniors are slated to compete in the Educators Rising National Competition in June — an annual performance-based event that tests aspiring teachers knowledge, skills and leadership. “Our students are really excelling in TISD,” Temple ISD Superintendent Bobby Ott told the Telegram. “Despite COVID we have had over 120 students compete at the state level in fine arts, CTE and athletics. This is another example of our students and staff setting the standard.” Temple ISD spokesman Christian Hernandez said Emily DeGraaff and Alison Elliot — officers for the Texas Association of Future Educators chapter at Temple High — will be the district’s first representatives at the national competition. They advanced after excelling during TAFE’s state competition.

Clawson selected TC Teacher of the Year

Fifteen years later, she said, that feeling still holds true. “That’s the best thing about working at Temple College . I really feel like I’m part of a family,” Clawson, a biology professor, told the Telegram. “People use that (saying) a lot, but I truly felt like everybody was there to help one another. Anybody I asked a question to, they helped me … and they still continue to do that.” This year, Clawson — who has been instrumental in the success of the Texas Bioscience Institute Middle College program at Temple Col- lege — was selected for the institution’s 33rd Claudia and W.T. Barnhart Teacher of the Year Award.

TSU Saturday graduation speaker came from Mexico to be a teacher

TSU Newsroom STEPHENVILLE  Krisol Villa Flores is driven. She wanted to be a teacher so badly, she daily commuted an hour each way to Tarleton State University’s Waco campus to take classes. A native of Chihuahua, Mexico, Krisol came to the United States eight years ago, not knowing English but having a determination to succeed. And succeed she has. She will take the stage Saturday morning at Tarleton’s Memorial Stadium to deliver the commencement address to graduates from the College of Education and the College of Science and Technology. Seeing her little girl at a distinct educational disadvantage gave Krisol that initial push to serve in the classroom.
