Investigators Brought in to Pinpoint San Angelo Water Contamination
The source of the contaminants remains unknown and in an effort to find the culprit for contamination, the State of Texas Department of Emergency Management reached out to the City of McAllen to request assistance.
Crews with the McAllen Public Utility department and an Emergency Manager will be traveling to San Angelo to help pinpoint where the pollution came from. Robert (Bob) Contreras, Coordinator for Grants and Government Affairs for Brown County, has provided an update on grants benefiting Brown County as shown below.
Brown County currently has four approved grants totaling $1,107,535 which the county is using to improve roads, provide emergency water supplies, rebuild low-water crossings, and to defer costs associated with the coronavirus pandemic.
In May 2020, Brown County applied for the Coronavirus Relief Fund (CRF) and was eligible to receive $55 for every person who lived outside of an incorporated area; the grant allowed for 20 percent to be paid up front. With 12,868 people living in unincorporated areas, Brown County was eligible for $707,740. The county received $141,548 (20 percent) in May, 2020. In December, the county had to account for that amount and reimburse the state for any money remaining. That money could only be spent on a limited range of purposes. Colorado County EMS was notified Monday evening that 200 doses of vaccine will be delivered for distribution this week. “Our Sub-Hub Plan has not yet been approved by the state and this allocation came as a surprise. We confirmed that it is separate from and not connected to our Sub Hub Plan submitted for state approval on January 24, 2021,” a statement from county officials stated.
Brown County Commissioners approved the adoption of guidelines and criteria for the purpose of potential future tax abatements during Monday’s meeting at the Brown County Courthouse.
All four commissioners – Precinct 1’s Gary Worley, Precinct 2’s Joel Kelton, Precinct 3’s Wayne Shaw and Precinct 4’s Larry Traweek – voted in favor, while County Judge Paul Lilly stated his opposition.
Worley stated, “Establishing guidelines and criteria does not mean we will automatically grant a tax abatement to Radiant Solar or anyone else. What it does mean is that 3M, Kohler, Superior Essex or any other industry in the county that wishes to expand and would like to have a tax abatement, the criteria is already set. It’s not just for one industry, it’s for every industry that might come in.
