Fort Bend Co Urges Residents to Mask Up as Delta Variant Spreads

By KTRH News Jul 23, 2021 Fort Bend County Judge KP George and leaders from the County Health Department and Office of Emergency Management Friday announced efforts being made in the County in response to the uptick in COVID-19 cases amongst unvaccinated residents and the highly contagious Delta variant. Fort Bend County Health and Human Services Director Dr. Jacqueline Minter reported that the first confirmed case of the highly-contagious Delta variant appeared in Fort Bend County one month ago with the vast majority of the severe illnesses having been from unvaccinated people.  “We have been able to verify the Delta variants increase in viral activity, in test positivity, in cases, and hospitalizations, including ICU,” stated Dr. Minter. Of those cases reported to the Fort Bend County Health Department, 77% were of the Delta lineage.”

Active Bell COVID-19 cases rise by 95; incidence rate highest since late February

Along with rising hospitalizations due to COVID-19, the Bell County Health District reported a rise of 95 new cases Thursday. The county now has 643 active reported cases of the virus — a sharp rise over Wednesday’s 548 active cases. Officials did not report any new deaths due to the virus, which remain at 470. The incidence rate for the virus is the highest the county has seen since late February — currently at 177.2 cases per 100,000 people. The Texas Department of State Health Services is reporting that the rise in cases statewide can be attributed to the delta variant of the virus, which accounts for most new infections.

Comal County s COVID active case count continues rise

Last Friday Comal County’s active COVID case count was approaching the 300 mark. This week it’s approaching the 400 mark. That’s part of an upward trend in cases being seen not only in Comal County, but across much of the rest of the country as the more easily-spread delta variant of the COVID-19 virus has become the dominant strain. Nationally, the majority of new cases are being found in unvaccinated individuals — with the CDC saying that more than 99% of COVID deaths over the last month were people who hadn’t been vaccinated. While Comal County says it has been tracking the vaccination status of those hospitalized and dying from COVID, it hasn’t released that information publicly. The Herald-Zeitung this week formally requested the data from county officials.
