Sask couple shares near death cardiac arrest survival story as part of Heart Month

  SASKATOON A Choiceland couple is speaking out about the importance of first responders after a cardiac arrest incident while they were at their cottage in Candle Lake. Glen Kelsey started feeling unwell on the evening of Jan. 16 after a normal day of snowshoeing and ice fishing with his wife, Connie. When he started heavily sweating and holding his chest, Connie called 911. Within minutes, volunteer first responder Debbie Hunter arrived. Louise Tarasiuk and Karen Mack, also first responders in Candle Lake, came shortly after. They all took training in order to provide initial care to patients before Parkland Ambulance paramedics coming from Prince Albert arrived.

February 4, 2021 By Jessica Mathews / news@whmi.com February is Heart Month and Livingston County residents are being encouraged to download a potentially lifesaving online app. Community members are encouraged to support Livingston County in becoming a Heart Safe community by learning CPR, downloading the Pulse Point App and following Livingston County EMS. The Pulse Point App will notify someone when a person nearby is having a cardiac arrest so that they can start CPR before professional responders arrive. The App also directs people to the nearest public Automated External Defibrillator or AED so they can shock the heart back into rhythm.

mgreier@salemnews.net SALEM The city health board met in special emergency session Wednesday to hire reinforcements for COVID-19 vaccine clinics and to purchase equipment. “Hopefully by the end of the summer, we’ll have a large part of the population vaccinated,” city Health Commissioner Alanna Stainbrook said. The city health department kicked off its vaccine clinics for people 80 years old and older this week and will continue next week, expanding to people 75 years and older, and continuing to expand in five-year increments each week until getting to 65 and older. She noted that all that is dependent on the number of vaccine doses they receive.
