Columnist Today, we commemorate the 75th anniversary of the handshake of Youngstown native George Shuba with Jackie Robinson, a defining moment in civil rights and a consequential addition to Mahoning Valley history. Rookie first basemen Jackie Robinson debuted for the Brooklyn Dodgers’ minor league affiliate Montreal Royals. He hit a three-run home run, and as he crossed home plate, Shuba instinctively raised his hand to congratulate him. The iconic scene will be captured in a statue of Shuba and Robinson in downtown Youngstown, to be dedicated in late summer. George Shuba’s handshake was groundbreaking the first interracial handshake in professional baseball.

COMMUNITY CALENDAR Meetings, events • The Morrow County History Center is now open regular hours. Starting April 11, Sunday afternoons, from 2-4 p.m. It is located at 17 West High Street, Mount Gilead. Currently, the special exhibit features memories of the 1960s. Not just the music, the fads and fashions and children’s toys, but photos and artifacts from Morrow County’s “Oil Boom.” A must-see is a tribute to those who fought for our country in the Vietnam War. Admission is free; face masks are required. With six rooms of displays, there is plenty of area to space apart. • The Morrow County Genealogical Society will hold its monthly meeting on April 24 at the Mount Gilead Glory Baptist Church, 600 N. Main St. The program entitled “Do You Know Ohio?” will be presented by Russ Mayer, 2 p.m., open to the public. A game of “trivia” about the Wonderful World of Ohio. Masks and social distancing required.

Obituary: Robert J Weir

Robert J. Weir, 78, of Stewartstown, N.H., passed away suddenly at his home on Friday evening, April 9, 2021. He was born in West Stewartstown on Feb. 7, 1943, a son to the late Harlie and Hallie (Sweatt) Weir. He attended the local schools and was a 1961 graduate of Colebrook Academy. For more than 30 years, Bob was a truck driver and construction crew member for Pike Industries, working on countless paving jobs all over the region in the summer months. For many winters, he worked on the lift crew at The Balsams Wilderness Ski Area. Bob enjoyed his large vegetable garden every summer and he enjoyed fishing with his wife. He willingly admitted that he was often “outfished.” A bit of a homebody, he was always out tinkering on something or other in typical New Englander style, and in the winter months he enjoyed being out in his plow truck. His family will miss and always remember one of his many catchphrases, “Love ya, kiddo,” and his son Bob and family will mis
