‘U.K. variant’ and ‘double mutant variant’ with high infectivity found in 40% of samples as on April 1 Genomic sequencing studies of SARS-CoV-2 samples from across the State done in national as well as State scientific institutions have indicated wide and intense transmission of various mutant variants, including variants of concern (VOC), confirming the worst fears of many public health experts.
“Sequencing of samples from across all districts as on April 1 done by the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB), New Delhi, has revealed the presence of the variant B.1.1.7 (first detected in the U.K.) and B.1.617 (“double mutant” reported from India) in 40% of the samples. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Each passing day, the second wave of Covid-19 seems to be revealing new symptoms. The latest one is skin sensitivity which prevents patients from wearing their dresses.So far, symptoms for coronavirus infection include fever, cough and shortness of breath. In severe cases, infection can lead to pneumonia or breathing difficulties. However, last week, two persons, one working as a production executive and the other an associate director on the sets of a Malayalam movie, developed fever and cough along with heaviness on head.
Despite the treatment, they developed skin sensitivity on their upper torso too. “Initially, we had only fever and cough for three to four days. But after that, we developed pain due to inflammation. It was Dr Lakshmi R Lakshman, director and chief physician, HealEd, Kochi, who diagnosed our problem as skin sensitivity,” said one of the Pune-based film professionals.

Instead of the earlier 20KL capacity, it s now double at 40KL capacity. And this isn t an exception in Kerala. However, it is at variance with the situation in the rest of the country where there is a scramble for oxygen with several hospitals reporting acute shortages.

Kerala Agriculture Minister VS Sunil Kumar has tested positive for Covid-19 for the second time.
He has been admitted to Thrissur Medical College. His son Niranjan Krishna also tested positive following which VS Sunil Kumar took an RT-PCR test which confirmed the infection.
VS Sunil Kumar and his son Niranjan Krishna will stay at the Thrissur medical college hospital until they test negative. The health department said those who were in contact with the minister recently should stay in quarantine. They also said the minister does not have any health complications.
