This is the Covid-19 situation in St Helens as we reach mid-February

THIS is the sixth week under the third national coronavirus lockdown, which was imposed to bring down spiralling cases numbers across the country. At the end of last year, days before we headed into another national lockdown, the weekly rate of Covid-19 in St Helens was 371 per 100,000 (for week ending December 31, 2020) after infections surged over Christmas week. Cases also soared in the early weeks of January but are now subsiding, with the case rate for the week to February 11 284.6 per 100,000, lower than the number when we headed into the latest lockdown. This – along with the strong progress with vaccinations – is encouraging but we are still seeing more than 500 positive case each week.

The primary care network-led arm of St Helens’ vaccination programme has been up and running since December, with GP practices working flat through the top four priority groups. Mass vaccination clinics, supported by an army of volunteers, are being held at Saints’ rugby stadium near almost every day, dependent on supplies.
