SIU, Shawnee Community College sign agreement for students to earn two degrees

Southern Illinois University Carbondale and Shawnee Community College today, May 27, formalized a reverse transfer agreement that will allow eligible students to earn their associate degrees from Shawnee while they earn their bachelor’s degrees from SIU.

Curvey graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1985 with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. In December 1987 he earned his Certificate to teach Secondary Mathematics from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and worked as a claims adjuster for Millers Mutual Insurance Agency. He began his teaching career in with the high school in 2001 as a mathematics instructor. He also served as the head boys and girls cross country coach and assistant boys track coach. In 2013, he earned a Master’s of Science Degree in Education Administration from SIUE.

According to a press release from his office, Sen. Cotton re-introduced the “SECURE CAMPUS Act” on April 22. The bill would “prohibit Chinese nationals from receiving visas to the United States for graduate or post-graduate studies in STEM fields and would ban participants in China’s foreign talent recruitment programs and Chinese nationals from taking part in federally-funded STEM research.”

On July 1, Southern Illinois University Carbondale will launch a new college that delves into how people communicate, from the fine and performing arts to mass media. The College of Arts and Media consists of six academic units in both undergraduate and graduate levels: the School of Architecture, School of Art and Design, School of Journalism, School of Media Arts, the School of Music, and the Department of Theater. Interdisciplinary graduate programs for the School of Journalism and the School of Media Arts will be administered at the college level. About 760 students will be enrolled within the college, said Meera Komarraju, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs.
