Day two of Severe Weather Awareness week is all about Severe Thunderstorm Warnings (WBNG) Severe Weather Awareness Week continues today with the focus shifting to knowing what to do when a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued. These warnings are issued when a thunderstorm is indicating the ability to have wind gust stronger than 58 MPH or produce hail larger than one inch in diameter. Not all Severe Thunderstorms are the same however and that is why officials believe it is critical to read the warning s text to understand all of the details. David Nicosia, the Warnings Coordination Meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Binghamton explains that the information in the warning is important and the public needs to be aware of it. The warning will include things such as wind speeds, hail size, and where the impacts will be felt. (WBNG) This week is Severe Weather Awareness Week in New York according to the National Weather Service. Each day this week will have a different theme revolving around severe weather. On average, the National Weather Service in Binghamton issues 141 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings each year long with 8 tornado warnings. David Nicosia, the Warning Coordinator Meteorologist in Binghamton hopes that the public will use the public to use this time to reintroduce and prepare themselves for the new weather hazards that the region will experience in the spring and summer months such as severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, and floods.

Southern Tier weather: How much snow to expect on Thursday

Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a Winter Weather Advisory beginning at 11 p.m. tonight and lasting until 5 p.m. Thursday, covering all of the Southern Tier, the western Catskill and the Northern Tier of northeast Pennsylvania.  The Central New York region is forecast to receive the largest snow totals, with eight inches or more possible between tonight and late Thursday afternoon, the Weather Service said. Syracuse is in store for six to eight inches of snow, forecasters said.

April is coming in with weather more typical for late February. The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for much of the Twin Tiers until 5 p.m. April 1. WNBF News/Roger Neel Photo Authorities say total snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches are possible, especially over higher elevations. The advisory area includes in the Twin Tiers, Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Tioga, Delaware Tompkins and Oneida Counties in New York and Bradford and Susquehanna Counties in Pennsylvania. Forecasters say the heaviest snowfall early in the morning will taper to afternoon snow showers. Motorists should expect slippery road conditions at least through the morning commute.  Slow down and use caution while traveling.
