Prosecutors on Tuesday requested that the Taipei District Court impose the maximum sentence against former president Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) for allegedly illegally profiting from the sale of three media companies owned by the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) which resulted in the party losing NT$7.2 billion (US$258.56 million at current exchange rate).
Ma and the other defendants in the case yesterday released statements denying any wrongdoing, saying they made the deals to dispose of the KMT’s assets and did not derive any personal financial gain.

The Taipei District Court on Wednesday sentenced to death a 24-year-old man for fatally stabbing a man in New Taipei City’s Sindian District (新店) in March last year.
Wang Ping-hua (王秉華) was found guilty of the murder of a man surnamed Lin (林), who at the time of the murder was sitting on his motorcycle waiting for his sister to finish work.
The incident happened in the wake of an argument over where to eat between Wang and his wife while driving in his vehicle, court documents showed.

Taipei, May 13 (CNA) The Taipei District Court on Thursday issued an order for the detention of a Taiwanese food delivery worker, who is the main suspect in the death a Vietnamese woman in the city the previous day.
The woman, 45, was found dead in her apartment on Linsen North Road Wednesday morning when her boyfriend went to visit her, police said.
