The Adak was also there on September 11th, when hundreds of thousands were desperate to be evacuated from lower Manhattan on September 11th.  That event is now recognized as the largest water rescue in world history, when more than half a million people were evacuated by boat. Star Spangled Salute: A World War II Veteran Created Earth Day

Posted By: JJ Hayes April 20, 2021 @ 4:05 am Blogs, JJ Hayes Show Page     Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors 96-year old World War II Veteran William Cherkasky.  After studying medicine at Northwestern, William and a friend wanted to see the war so they enlisted in the Army Reserve. His friend went to 106th Infantry and did not survive the Battle of the Bulge.  William joined the 89th and marched from France to Germany.  Part of that tour he helped liberated a concentration camp.  After the war his life took a turn from medicine to politics and it wasn’t until he was Chief of Staff for Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin that the idea of the environment being a hot button issue really sank in. A few years later, William helped create and launch Earth Day, now recognized on this day, April 20th, every year.  Thank you William for caring about the planet and THANK YOU for your service.

Posted By: JJ Hayes April 19, 2021 @ 4:13 am Blogs, JJ Hayes Show Page     Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors the dying wish of World War II and Korean War Veteran Col Wallace Taylor.  When Wallace passed away a few weeks ago, he had outlived everyone in his family and he had one dying wish, and that was to be buried next to his Mom in Kentucky. So, Robert Lynch, who works at the VA where Wallace was honored, saw to it that volunteers made his wish happen.  The group, Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, escorted Wallace back home, where he was laid to rest next to his mother on Sunday.  Thank you to all the Veterans of the CVMA and THANK YOU Wallace for your service.
