A booming economy coupled with record low interest rates could let the “inflation genie” out of the bottle, according to Nationals Senator Matt Canavan.
“We don’t want the inflation genie to come out of the bottle because he doesn’t grant you wishes. Once he’s out it’s too late,” he told Sky News.
His comment comes as the Morrison government prepares to hand down a big-spending federal budget later today which is expected to put the Commonwealth in deficit for decades.
Additionally, the post-coronavirus jobs boom is expected to wipe $53 billion from the forecasted budget deficit, lowering the predicted deficit to $161 billion.

Senator James McGrath was given the number one spot on the LNP’s Senate ticket ahead of the next federal election, who was followed by Nationals Senator Matt Canavan.
Ms Stoker, who was recently promoted in Cabinet, was given third place on the ticket which makes it more difficult to secure re-election.
“They should have backed in Amanda Stoker, it shouldn’t have been a question mark whether a minister and someone as well-credentialed as her should have to fight and then be demoted to number three where she’s not guaranteed a cent,” Ms Panahi said.

Last night Prime Minister Scott Morrison delivered a presentation at the Business Council of Australia where he mapped out a path to meet the ambitious net zero emissions goal.
Mr Canavan told Sky News China will never “sacrifice their own growth, their own development and their own industry” to meet climate targets.
“China will keep on emitting as we’ve seen last year despite their lip service to net zero emissions and we’ll be left behind”.

Net zero emissions targets are a “scam” which essentially hand China a “blank cheque” to continue aggressive military tactics in the region according to Nationals Senator Matt Canavan.
The prime minister’s department has created a senior position to coordinate climate strategy, sparking debate over whether Mr Morrison is considering adopting a net zero emissions climate strategy by 2050.
Mr Canavan said, “I’m dead set against us signing up to net zero and I’m dead set against net zero because net zero is the biggest scam since you last received an email from Nigeria”.
