Memorial Day is a thank you to the heroes who died for our freedom

After what feels like suspended animation thanks to COVID-19, we re about to enjoy our first holiday since health precautions and safeguards were relaxed just in time for what many of us consider the unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day. We could be so intent on getting our summer started, and making up for lost time, we might lose sight of what Memorial Day was intended to be. Some of us have parents and grandparents who can remember when Memorial Day was called Decoration Day and even further back than that, it was an attempt to honor the war dead of the War Between the States, evolving into a remembrance of all those men and women in uniform who sacrificed their lives to preserve our liberties.

Memorial Event in Florence

FLORENCE – The 2021 Florence-Lauderdale County Memorial Day Ceremony takes place at 11am on May 31 in Veterans Memorial Park at 301 Veterans Drive, just north of Wilson Dam.  The number of attendees is not restricted, however, seating at the outdoor event is limited. Plenty of standing room is available and attendees are encouraged to bring chairs.  The Memorial Day Ceremony honors all fallen American heroes for the price they paid in defending our freedom.  The local theme for this year’s ceremony is  “Freedom is Not Free, Some Paid All.” Attending the ceremony is a small way of demonstrating that gratitude.  Family members of fallen heroes are especially encouraged to attend the Memorial Day Ceremony in remembrance of their love ones. Veterans are encouraged to attend in honor of their fellow service members. Veterans in attendance will be recognized collectively and thanked for their service.
