JUSUN rejects governors’ proposal, gives condition to end strike
JUSUN says its demand for payment of funds meant for the judiciary directly from the federation account must be met for it to call off the strike. 5 min read
The striking Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has rejected the 36 state governors’ proposed template for the implementation of judiciary’s financial autonomy being demanded by the workers.
The governors, in their proposal, seek the creation of a State Account Allocation Committee (SAAC) to oversee the distribution of funds to the three arms of government at the state level.
But in a communique the union issued after a May 8 meeting of its National Working Committee (NWC), the union insisted on its demand that funds meant for the state judiciaries must be deducted directly from the federation account and paid to the heads of courts through the National Judicial Council (NJC).

The Chairman of Cross River State chapter of the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Comrade Asanya Ebong, has accused the Attorney-General, the Accountant-General and the Auditor-General of the Federation of being responsible for the prolonged strike action embarked upon by the members of the union across the nation.
Ebong, who spoke with journalists in Calabar on Friday, condemned the positions of the three top government functionaries, saying that their failure to implement the Executive Order 10 issued by President Muhammadu Buhari and respect the 1999 constitution as amended, necessitated the strike.
He accused the government functionaries of the role they played in not enforcing President Buhari’s directive, stating that such action was disrespectful to the office of the President and called for the officials to be sanctioned or forced to resign honourably.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, has said the continuous detention of Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju Omiyinka, aka Baba Ijesha, is based on legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions in the state Ministry of Justice.
He also said the actor would not be released until the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria called off its nationwide strike and the courts resumed so that he could be arraigned.
Odumosu stated these in reaction to Wednesday’s protest by Omiyinka’s colleague, Yomi Fabiyi, and others, who demonstrated at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti, Yaba, to demand his release on bail.
