Osinbajo kicks against prohibition of cryptocurrency, calls for regulation

Daily Post Nigeria Published Yemi Osinbajo, the Vice President of Nigeria has kicked against the prohibition of digital currency in Nigeria. Osinbajo who called for the regulation of cryptocurrency in Nigeria said Cryptocurrencies in the coming years will challenge traditional banking in ways that cannot be imagined. He said although he fully appreciates the strong position of the CBN, SEC and some of the anti-corruption agencies on the possible abuse of cryptocurrencies, he believes that their position should be the subject of further reflection. He explained that the future of money and finance, especially for traditional banking, must be as exciting as it is frightening but disruption makes room for efficiency and progress.

NUJ calls for Sheikh Gumi s arrest

TODAY February 26, 2021 The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), on Friday, called for the arrest of Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, for saying journalists are criminals for calling bandits criminals. The union expressed reservation on Gumi’s remarks during an interview on Arise TV on Wednesday where he labelled journalists as criminals for calling bandits criminals. In his interview, Gumi said: “You are emphasising on criminality, I don’t know. Even the Press (journalists) are criminals too because they are putting oil into fire [sic]. These people are listening to you, don’t address them as criminals”. “It is instructive to note that one of the gangs that were recently interviewed by Nigerian journalist, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz and published in Daily Trust of today where the bandit leader insisted on being introduced properly as “Kachalla Halilu Sububu Seno, Leader of all Terrorists. He is the Leader. Yet Malam Gumi insists they are not criminals.”

NUJ condemns Sheikh Gumi s comments calling journalists criminals

Daily Post Nigeria Published The NUJ National President, Chris Isiguzo, said, “We do not see any correlation between journalism and criminality.” The statement said, “This unnecessary and unprovoked attack on members of the media by a hitherto respected cleric who decided to embark on strange errands, is unacceptable and it is becoming clearer now that he is pursuing a different agenda. We equally recall a recent statement credited to Sheik Gumi where he was inciting bandits, by encouraging religious biases among soldiers on the battlefield.” The NUJ expressed shock that the same Sheik Gumi who has used the media to speak to leaders to advance his course, is at the same time attacking the Journalists for simply describing bandits as criminals.

Zamfara abduction: UN Security Council told to visit Nigeria, help end kidnapping

Daily Post Nigeria Published The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has asked the UN Security Council to urgently visit Nigeria to press the authorities to end the continuing abductions of students and the country’s increasing level of insecurity. SERAP made the request in a statement issued on Friday following the abduction of over 300 female Government Secondary School students in Jangebe, Talata Mafara Local Government Area on Friday morning by bandits. It believes that a UN Security Council resolution would help put pressure on Nigerian authorities to take urgent and concrete measures to end students’ abductions in the country.

Jigawa: Gov Badaru assents law prescribing death sentence for rapists, kidnappers

Daily Post Nigeria Published Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Muhammad Badaru Abubakar has signed into law Violence Against Person Prohibition bill. DAILY POST had reported that the Jigawa State House of Assembly has passed into law a bill for the prohibition of violence against persons. The Governor said the law will help in reducing the rate of crime in the state. Badaru said the bill was assented after consulting with the council of Ulamas that the new laws are not in conflict with Islamic laws and culture of Jigawa people. “The new laws stipulated in the bill include; Death sentence for male or female rapist or life sentence without the option of fine. Anyone who aides or gives order to rape another person shall receive a death or life sentence.”
