2022 World Games recruits star power to promote event

The 2022 World Games are counting on some star power to help promote the event coming to the Birmingham-Hoover metro area next year, the chairman of the Alabama Sports Council told the Hoover Area Chamber of Commerce on May 20.
Organizers of the 2022 World Games have named soccer star Catherine Reddick Whitehill, Olympic gold medal bobsledder Vonetta Flowers, Iraq War veteran and âDancing with the Starsâ competitor Noah Galloway, NBA all-star Charles Barkley and country music legend Randy Owen as honorary co-chairs of the games, Nick Sellers said at the Hoover chamberâs monthly luncheon at the Hoover Country Club.

Birmingham: With the state struggling to improve its last-in-the nation vaccination rate for COVID-19, officials say workers at some immunization sites are providing only a fraction of the shots they could give out. A vaccination clinic in its third week of operation in Lauderdale County has provided about 500 doses, but project manager Mike Melton told WAAY-TV the site could easily provide 500 shots a day “if the demand was there.” In metro Birmingham, where a mass vaccination site was set to open Wednesday at an outlet mall, some questioned whether the facility was even needed since so few people have shown up at an immunization site at the Birmingham Crossplex, an indoor sports facility. WBMA-TV reports it visited three vaccination locations Tuesday, and none had lines or were requiring appointments. MONTGOMERY – Alabama High School Athletic Association Executive Director Steve Savarese announced plans to step down from the position he has held for the last 15 years effective July 1. He made the announcement at Wednesday’s annual Central Board of Control spring meeting.
Savarese did agree to remain in the position at the pleasure of the CBOC until his replacement has been hired and has had ample time to adjust to the position.
A very successful teacher, coach and administrator widely admired for his leadership skills, Mr. Savarese became just the fourth full-time Executive Director of the 100-year old organization in 2007. Cliff Harper became the first full-time executive director in 1948, serving until 1966. Herman L. “Bubba” Scott replaced Harper and served until 1991. Dan Washburn then served in the position from 1991 until 2007.
