Vassar scholarship, dean s list and more news for South Hills alumni

Vassar scholarship Baldwin High School senior Mariah Jones is a bright pupil with an interest in music and a dedicated athlete. Jones not only applies herself to learning in the classroom, but has sought out an opportunity to collaborate on a research project with Dr. Brett Andrews, Research Assistant Professor at The University of Pittsburgh. Yet, when the high school senior considered college, she saw financial obstacles. Jones had been working with an advisor through CollegePoint, a free virtual advising program that helps students with the college application process. Commentary: Alliance needs call to action on racism

Commentary: Alliance needs call to action on racism Portia Johnson EDITOR S NOTE: The following is the statement Smith Township resident Portia Johnson read during Thursday night s special Alliance City Council meeting about racism in the community after her home was vandalized. In her comments, Johnson used the racial slur that was painted on her home. She allowed the USA Today Network-Ohio to share her powerful words with our readers, but we have declined to use the slur in print.    I’m sure that you all have seen the horrific graffiti that dons the siding of my family home. I would like to start by commending the Alliance and Smith Township Police Departments, clergy leaders, City Council members Sheila Cherry and Cindy King, University of Mount Union, my superintendent Rob Gress, teachers, staff, parents, students, community members and passersby for your support through this horrible ordeal.

Mount Union Adds Medical Spanish Minor

Mount Union Adds Medical Spanish Minor December 03, 2020 ALLIANCE, Ohio – The University of Mount Union is pleased to announce it has added a minor in medical Spanish to its academic offerings. The program is designed to help healthcare employees meet the needs of their Spanish-speaking patients. “Given that communication between healthcare practitioners and patients is paramount, the medical Spanish program will help medical workers acquire the communicative skills needed to service Spanish-speaking patients,” said Gregg Courtad, professor of Spanish. The program was inspired by Mount Union alumni working in the medical field who noted interpreters were not always on hand at medical facilities in the moments when they were most needed.
