He is one of hundreds of HIV-positive people participating in clinical trials for COVID-19 vaccines. “I’m glad that I participated, that it led to the body of knowledge,” he said. But being a part of the vaccine trials was not always an option for him or the 1.2 million HIV-positive people in the U.S. They fought for it. HIV is a lifelong infection that attacks the immune system. Once a death sentence, today there are many medications that can help people living with HIV keep their immune systems healthy and in check.

The MRI revealed a tumor on her distal pancreas and her gastroenterologist referred her to Dr. Jason Maggi, a surgical oncologist at Jersey City Medical Center, an RWJBarnabas Health facility. “I wasn’t expecting them to say they found a tumor,” said Young, 47, who has been a special education teacher in East Orange since 2001. “I Googled it and the first thing that popped up was pancreatic cancer. Obviously, I was totally distraught and worried about my children, my grandchildren, and my husband because I’m young. I’m not ready to die.”
