UMaine Extension webinar offers farmers control options for rodents, wildlife

(Photo courtesy University of Maine Cooperative Extension) University of Maine Cooperative Extension will host a webinar about methods for control of rodents and wildlife on the farm, Tuesday, Feb. 23, from 1 - 3 p.m. “Rats and Other Vermin Control on the Farm” includes guidance for keeping rodents out of barns and grain storage areas, controlling racoons, foxes and weasels in hen houses and other livestock pens, and reducing predation of pastured animals. Presenters will be Kathy Murray, a Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry IPM entomologist; and wildlife biologist Adam Vashon from USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Wildlife Services.

UMaine Extension 4-H club offers second session for new, interested youth Tue, 02/02/2021 - 12:00pm University of Maine Cooperative Extension 4-H is offering a second session of the 4-H for All club for youth ages 5–13 who are new, or interested in becoming, 4-H members. Meetings will be held online, from 6 - 7 p.m., starting Feb. 17, and continuing March 17 and April 21. The 4-H for All club gives youth and families a way to explore 4-H and connect with others across Maine. Youth will participate in projects, and learn what 4-H has to offer and how to become more involved in the program.

Rep Pluecker recaps first week of committee meetings, previews upcoming committee work

Dear friends, Last week was the first week of meetings for the Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry Committee and the Criminal Justice & Public Safety Committee. In the Agriculture Committee, we heard presentations from the Department of Agriculture (including from Warren’s own Amanda Beal), the Bureau of Parks & Lands, and the Land Use Planning Commission. In the Criminal Justice & Public Safety Committee, we received an update from the Department of Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck, as well as the Maine State Police, Emergency Management Services, and the Office of Opioid Response. Our committee has also begun working with the legislature’s Appropriations Committee on this year’s supplemental budget. This budget will make changes to the current budget to make up for revenue losses and change any programming necessary to make the budget work.

Second session of 4-H
