THE high daily numbers for Covid-19 in the Winchester district are continuing. On December 26 104 new cases were reported, but the figure was 57 on December 27 and 56 yesterday. But today 84 new cases have been reported, higher than since the peak of the pandemic in the spring. In the last four days 12 per cent of the total number of cases since last March have been reported. The district’s number of cases since last March is currently 2,521, with an infection rate of 1,907 per 100,000 people as of Sunday. Today’s infection rate for Winchester was unavailable. The national infection rate is 3,635 per 100,000. The ‘district’ covers more than just the city and includes a swathe of central Hampshire from Micheldever to Denmead.

More than 100 new coronavirus cases recorded in Dorset in latest 24 hours MORE than 2,000 people across Hampshire have tested positive for coronavirus over the weekend. In total 2,269 people have tested positive for covid-19, based on figures from the government. In Southampton alone, there were 358 recorded cases. Meanwhile, in Portsmouth, 337 more people tested positive for the virus. At the lower end of the spectrum, Gosport saw only 49 new cases, and Fareham, 116. However, despite a sharp increase in positive results, only 13 hospital patients who tested positive for the virus have died over the same period. Only one of these deaths was recorded at University Hospital Southampton, the other 12 were at Portsmouth hospitals.
It means a total of 885 people have died with the virus across the county. Three of the deaths came at the Hampshire Hospitals Trust, all on December 27. The University Hospital Southampton recorded one death, coming on December 25. Portsmouth Hospitals Trust recorded the other eight deaths, four each on December 27 and December 26. Since the start of the pandemic, 379 people have died with Covid-19 at Portsmouth Hospitals Trust. Across England, a further 318 people died in hospital with coronavirus. Patients were aged between 38 and 100 years all and all but 13 had underlying health conditions. The south east recorded 61 deaths.

The national rate is 3,552 per 100,000. The district covers more than just the city and covers a swathe of central Hampshire from Micheldever to Denmead. In the week between December 21-28 (today) there have been 348 new cases reported in Winchester district, compared to 211 in the week to December 20. Winchester is faring better than Southampton and Eastleigh where the rate has more then doubled. In the week to December 16 the figures were 121 in Eastleigh and 395 in Southampton. In the week to December 23 the numbers are 287 and 822.
