KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 3 The government’s extension of the movement control order (MCO) to February 18 without new strategies to combat Covid-19 has led to open questions about its capability to steer the country out of the pandemic safely. Disquiet about the effectiveness of the MCO already existed prior to yesterday’s extension, bolstered by the government’s permission for an assortment of business sectors to remain open and the continued rise in new Covid-19 cases locally.

A grim day for Malaysia as death toll reaches new high

PUTRAJAYA: It was another grim day for Malaysia as we marked a new Covid-19 milestone with a record 21 deaths reported yesterday. The number of Covid-19 patients in intensive care also reached an unprecedented 327 cases, with 145 requiring ventilator support. In his daily Covid-19 update, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the cumulative number of deaths from the disease now stood at 791. “Of the 21 deaths recorded (yesterday), 12 were recorded in Selangor. The rest were in Sabah (four), Johor (two), Kuala Lumpur (two) and Kedah (one). “All but one involved Malaysians, ” he added. Dr Noor Hisham added that those who died yesterday were aged between 36 and 83 years old.

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 2 Malaysia’s Covid-19 vaccine purchase won’t be affected by the Covax export authorisation system set up by the European Union (EU), its country representative said today. Michalis Rokas who is EU ambassador to Malaysia said the system that kicked off on January 30 is not an export ban, but rather a mechanism to ensure transparency in the vaccines made by companies with which the EU has signed a contract.

Klang Valley still a hotspot with several new clusters

PETALING JAYA: Selangor, Johor and Kuala Lumpur continue to record a high number of Covid-19 infections with 1,362,1, 068 and 702 cases, respectively. Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 14 new Covid-19 clusters were also detected yesterday, with nine linked to workplace transmissions, three involving high-risk groups, while the remaining two were linked to community transmissions. Selangor recorded three new clusters: Sungai Purun, the Jalan Lagoon construction site and Industri Puchong. Two clusters were detected in Perak, namely at Persiaran Raya and Lapangan Siber. Kuala Lumpur’s latest three clusters are at Jalan Puchong, Jalan Empat and Jalan Tan. Three new clusters were also found in Sabah in Ladang Sungai Pin, Kampung Samin and Padas Damit.
