Grand Bahama child predator strikes again!!!

NASSAU| Just days after he was charged in the Magistrate’s Court with two counts of attempted child stealing, accused predator Justin Seymour, 24, returned to a Grand Bahama court on Friday morning to face another charge of attempted child stealing. Police say the third charge stems from a third incident involving a child on Friday, January 8, 2021. The circumstances surrounding this latest incident is unclear. However, police said on Wednesday, January 6, Seymour attempted to lure a little girl from Walter Parker Primary School into his Chevy Cavalier. His plan failed so on Thursday, Friday, January 7, Seymour attempted to lure a little girl from Maurice Moore Primary School into his vehicle. The little girl started to follow him to his vehicle but the school’s crossing guard became suspicious and stopped the little girl after he discovered she did not know the man.

Teenager denied bail for robbery

fjohnson@tribunemedia.net A TEENAGER has been sent to prison for allegedly robbing a food store earlier this week. Malcolm Rolle, 18, appeared before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes, accused of using a gun to rob a cashier at Variety Food Store on December 17. The prosecution alleged that the accused also assaulted a police officer and attempted to escape lawful custody when he was arrested 10 days later on December 27. Due to the nature of the armed robbery charge, Rolle was not required to enter a plea. As a result, his case was adjourned to March 19, 2021 for service of a voluntary bill of indictment (VBI).

Man jailed for unlicensed firearm

fjohnson@tribunemedia.net A 32-year-old man who was found with an unlicensed firearm was sentenced to 15 months behind bars on Thursday. Prince Atherley was arrested after officers found a loaded 9mm pistol in his waistband on December 30. He pleaded guilty to possession of an unlicensed firearm and illegal ammunition during a hearing before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes. The court heard that night, officers on mobile patrol near Cambridge Street observed Atherley sitting in a car. The prosecution said the accused appeared to look in the direction of the officers before acting in a suspicious manner. Officers then approached Atherley and told him he would be searched for dangerous drugs and firearms. During their investigation, they discovered the weapon, which had eight unfired rounds of .9mm ammunition in it. Atherley was subsequently arrested and transported to the Central Detective Unit where he admitted to the offences in an interview with police.

lrolle@tribunemedia.net NATIONAL Security Minister Marvin Dames wants more ex-offenders to apply to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Committee to get their criminal records expunged, saying “everyone deserves a second chance.” His comments come after the Prerogative of Mercy Committee last week approved 147 requests for clemency and one for record expungement. Yesterday Mr Dames highlighted the move as a part of the government’s efforts of improving the rehabilitative justice system. “This has been something that our government had promised since coming into office that we’re going to take a very, very aggressive approach towards rehabilitation,” he told reporters ahead of yesterday’s Cabinet meeting.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS Minister of National Security Marvin Dames said yesterday the Rehabilitation of Offenders Committee has seen a recent uptick in requests for expungement of records. Speaking to reporters outside Cabinet, Dames once again urged individuals with criminal records to apply for the initiative and take advantage of a “second chance”. He noted that in the new year, the committee plans to launch an aggressive public education strategy so that Bahamians can be more informed about the opportunity. “We ask everyone to apply, as much as possible,” he said.
