But when he first saw a pygmy rabbit – perhaps what would become the most influential animal throughout his life – he didn’t know what it was. One spring break as a kid, Lancaster went camping with a few friends a little ways from his home in East Wenatchee.  Out in the sage, they saw this little creature. “We looked at it, and we all said … Pika?” Lancaster recalls.
