With every change in the federal executive administration, speculation rages over what changes to expect in regulation, policy, and guidance. The current transition is no different. And agricultural policy and conservation priorities are not excepted. Much of the current discussion involves the creation of carbon banks and the establishment of carbon credits. Though prudent, and likely consequential, the debate over these concepts is not likely to be settled soon. Implementation is even further down the road. Accordingly, we thought prudent to provide a refresher on what conservation and preservation incentives do exists in Arkansas to conserve water use, protect water quality, promote wildlife and aquatic life resources, and preserve ag lands. Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program: April 12-30 sign-up period. Applications can be started sooner and landowners are encouraged to do so. It is a voluntary state-federal program designed to improve water quality and habitat with a goal to protect and restore up to 60,000 acres of marginal cropland across 54 southern and western Minnesota counties with native plantings. Landowners simultaneously enroll land in a 14- to 15-year federal Conservation Reserve Program contract and a permanent Reinvest in Minnesota Program conservation easement. WASHINGTON – Today, April 8, 70 leading agriculture, conservation and wildlife groups delivered a letter to Congress requesting robust funding for conservation programs and technical assistance in fiscal year (FY) 2022 appropriations.
In the letter, American Farmland Trust, the National Association of Conservation Districts, the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition, the National Wildlife Federation and other signatories called upon House and Senate appropriators to provide needed robust increases to discretionary United States Department of Agriculture conservation funding and reject any cuts to farm bill conservation programs through the FY22 appropriations process.

2021 wetland restoration: The Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources has announced a conservation easement sign-up period through April 7. The goal is to generate wetland credits in specific Wetland Bank Service Areas throughout the state for the Local Government Road Wetland Replacement Program. The program was formed to ensure road reconstruction and other road maintenance projects provide wetland mitigation for affected wetlands. Renville County is in a bank service area that is in need of generating credits. The Board of Water and Soil Resources will be paying a predetermined amount for cropland and non-cropland.
