Smoke coming from the riverbed in the 4700 block of Railroad Ave. at 3:30 p.m. Friday alerted firefighters to burning grass and tree debris.
GBFD assisted the Ellinwood Fire Department at 12:55 p.m. Saturday at 395 SE 90 Ave. by helping with the water supply as a controlled burn was brought back under control.
A fire was reported at 12:52 p.m. Sunday at 1423 8th St. Grass was on fire next to a residence but the homeowner was using a fire extinguisher to contain it when firefighters arrived.
A fire was reported at 3:03 p.m. Sunday at the City of Great Bend Compost Site, 97 SW 5 Ave. The compost was smoldering and had started a grass fire on the berm.

GREAT BEND – Randy and Sandy Smith were recognized as the 2020 Citizens of the Year by the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce for their lifetime of joy, caring, and good deeds brought to Great Bend. Sandy was posthumously recognized while Randy tearfully accepted the award surrounded by his friends, colleagues and late son, David Smith’s wife, Heather Davis, and their children. Smith accepted the award during a surprise presentation in mid-February, with the public announcement being made during the Chamber’s virtual Awards Night on Saturday.
GREAT BEND A Larned man was arrested Tuesday afternoon in Great Bend after a volunteer organization that creates online profiles of teens attempting to attract child predators tipped off investigators the man was traveling to the area.
The organization, known as Motor City Justice, contacted the Barton County Sheriff’s Office and shared information about the individual allegedly attempting to solicit unlawful activity with a juvenile, according to a release from Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir.
Deputies then put an area in the 3700 block of Eighth Street in Great Bend under surveillance and arrested Lonny R. Miller, 32, when he showed up about 5 p.m.

An Ellinwood man was arrested after Barton County Sheriff’s Office deputies discovered suspected narcotics during a traffic stop in Great Bend Sunday morning.
According to Sheriff Brian Bellendir, at about 9:53 a.m. Sunday, BCSO Deputy Sheriff Alexandria Mason stopped a white Chevy Malibu at 24th Street and Paseo Drive in Great Bend for a traffic infraction. During the course of the investigation, BCSO deputies became suspicious of illegal drug activity and a canine officer was called to the scene to assist. After further probable cause was developed, a search of the vehicle ensued, in which deputies located suspected methamphetamine, prescription drugs and paraphernalia. One individual, Garrett Buckbee, 24, of Ellinwood, was arrested at the scene.
