Josh Cook doubles up in crash strewn second Thruxton encounter

Josh Cook wrapped up a second win of the weekend at Thruxton to extend his early lead in the British Touring Car Championship in a race that featured two large accidents elsewhere on the grid.
Cook managed to hold the lead when the lights went out despite the additional weight on his car, but the race was quickly halted after a huge accident at turn one involving Jade Edwards, Glynn Geddie and Andy Neate.
Going into the fast right-hander, Neate tagged the rear of Geddie’s CUPRA and sent it into a spin, with the innocent Edwards being collected as all three cars headed off into the tyres at speed. Geddie’s car would go into the barriers backwards before riding up over the bonnet of Edwards’ Honda, eventually coming to rest upside down.

Despite saying he was âguttedâ to miss out on pole position for the British Touring Car Championship season opener by a small margin, Josh Cook was overall pleased with a front-row starting position for race one.
Cook has never previously qualified on the front row at his home circuit in his six years in the BTCC to-date, but the 29-year-old has claimed half of his eight BTCC race wins at the Hampshire circuit.
In tricky wet and drying conditions on Saturday, Cook narrowly missed out on pole position, as Ash Sutton edged the Honda racer by just 0.053 seconds.

The new British Touring Car Championship season kicks off this weekend at Thruxton, with a full grid of 29 cars ready to do battle on the quickest circuit on the calendar.
Although no fans will be in attendance – hopefully the final time that will be the case – there is set to be plenty of action for those watching live on ITV4 to enjoy after a busy winter that saw a raft of chances across the grid.
That is most notably true amongst the manufacturer-backed teams after the departure of Honda from the series, leaving Team Dynamics to run as an Independent outfit for the first time in more than a decade.
Ash Sutton topped the times in the opening free practice session of the new British Touring Car Championship season at Thruxton. A racer from Dereham has set his sights on glory this season as he aims for his third Mini Challenge title in three years.
The Davanti Tyres-backed driver, Dan Zelos, 22, claimed both the rookie and graduate cups in his first two seasons in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) support series.
Last year he narrowly missed out on the main title in a season disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
