The UWI Regional Headquarters, Jamaica. W.I. Saturday, May 1, 2021 The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is pleased to advise of appointments and reappointments for members of its senior Executive Management approved at its annual business meeting of University Council.
Regarded as the regional university’s highest governing body, the University Council, chaired by Chancellor Robert Bermudez, met virtually on Friday, April 30, 2021. The Council is authorised by The UWI’s Charter and Statutes to review the work of the University together with the audited statement of accounts and makes required appointments of new and returning Executives, Deans and Senior Managers.
Sir Hilary Beckles gets six more years as UWI vice-chancellor

The University of the West Indies (UWI) has reappointed Professor Sir Hilary Beckles as vice-chancellor for another six years.
The decision was made by the university council, chaired by chancellor Robert Bermudez, at its virtual annual business meeting on Friday.
In a media release on Saturday, UWI said the new appointments and reappointments of senior executive management, deans and senior manager were in keeping with its charter and statutes and posts take effect from August 1.
Beckles was first appointed in 2015 and was the eighth vice-chancellor of the university. He has 40 years service with UWI as a professor of economic history, pro vice-chancellor for undergraduate studies, and a 13-year tenure as principal of UWI’s Cave Hill campus in Barbados. Despite “a most extraordinary” year, the University of the West Indies has managed to put out a “sterling” performance, rising above the challenges that posed a threat to its existence, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles declared Friday, hours before his tenure as the university’s ninth Vice-Chancellor was renewed.
Late Friday, the Jamaica Gleaner reported that Sir Hilary’s five-year term as Vice-Chancellor was renewed by the university council.
Presenting his 2019/2020 year in review report to the university council, Sir Hilary pointed out that the COVID-19 pandemic came on the heels of devastations from recent hurricanes and against the background of continued struggles in the region with the scourge of non-communicable diseases.

Thursday, April 29, 2021 The University of the West Indies (UWI) and WhiteBoard Labs (WBL) of India will sign a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) as a commitment to advancing a mutually beneficial goal to improve access to tertiary education and training for the people of India and the West Indies through a Virtual Centre of Excellence.
