Derrick Blanton, 39, was given the maximum sentence last week after jurors convicted him of first-degree manslaughter in December for killing Isiah Smith, 29, on Aug. 18, 2019. With credit for 18 months in jail since his arrest, Blanton is scheduled to serve the first 4¼ years of his 8½-year term in prison and the balance on supervised release.

MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - A Bloomington man pleaded guilty to murdering his wife and shooting his next-door neighbors, including a 12-year-old girl, in August, according to the Hennepin County Attorney s Office. As part of a plea deal, 48-year-old Jason Mesich pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, second-degree assault and first-degree assault. Under the agreement, he is expected to be sentenced to more than 48 years behind bars. He will likely be more than 80 years old by the time he can let out for supervised release. His formal sentencing is scheduled for March 15.

Blanton was sentenced Wednesday to 103 months in prison for fatally shooting 29-year-old Isiah Smith in August of 2019. Smith was the ex-boyfriend of Blanton s girlfriend. Blanton was facing second-degree murder charges in the case, but the jury found him guilty on Dec. 22 of the lesser offense based on a variety of contributing factors, including that Blanton was acting in the heat of passion.

Jason Mesich, 48, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder of his wife, 47-year-old Angela Lynn Mesich on Aug. 30, 2020, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.  Mesich also pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted murder and second-degree assault of his two neighbors and first-degree assault of a Bloomington police officer.
