SPRINGFIELD For more than half a century, anyone in Illinois who wanted to own a gun needed to first apply for a special state identification card.
But now the state’s top court is being asked to decide whether the Firearm Owner’s Identification cards popularly called FOID cards are a necessary safeguard or a violation of the U.S. Constitution.
Last week, a downstate judge ruled the FOID card system was unconstitutional, reducing residents’ Second Amendment rights to bear arms to a “façade.”
Gun control advocates denounced the ruling as “frightening and radical,” and Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul quickly appealed the decision to the Illinois Supreme Court.
Sen. John Cornyn and Senate GOP Introduce Concealed-Carry Reciprocity Bill
A group of Senate Republicans, led by Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), have introduced a bill that would allow individuals with concealed carry privileges in their home state to exercise those rights in any other state with concealed carry laws.
“This bill focuses on two of our country’s most fundamental constitutional protections the Second Amendment’s right of citizens to keep and bear arms and the Tenth Amendment’s right of states to make laws best-suited for their residents,” Cornyn said in a statement. “I look forward to working with my colleagues to advance this important legislation for law-abiding gun owners nationwide.”
Rep. Ryan Warner, R-Perryopolis, is inviting current concealed carry permit holders and those considering obtaining a permit to attend an upcoming Concealed Carry Seminar.
The free event will be held on Thursday, June 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Connellsville Township Firehall, 905 Fireman St., Connellsville. It will feature a presentation by Kim Stolfer, president and founder of Firearms Owners Against Crime.
âThis is an informative seminar for the most seasoned gun owner, someone just thinking about obtaining a concealed carry permit or anyone in between,â Warner said. âI hope people will take advantage of this opportunity and join us.â
Pre-registration is required, and space is limited due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions.
