Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene says the Mahoning County jail is the largest mental health facility in the county. “When we have 500 inmates, we know that one third of those inmates are on some type of psychotropic meds,” he said. “We started realizing: Where are these people going to go when they get released? Where is their next meal going to come from? Who is going to give them their meds? These are all things that weren’t thought about before.” Interventions through community partnerships can stop the endless cycle, and find more appropriate places to treat and house them than jail, Greene said.

YOUNGSTOWN A troubled 38-year-old man with a history of substance abuse and thefts, and a pending felonious assault case in Trumbull County, was sentenced Thursday to six months in the Mahoning County jail. Nicholas J. Lee, 38, of Lancer Court in Warren and other addresses in Youngstown and Niles, pleaded guilty earlier to felony robbery for stealing $400 worth of wire from the Home Depot in Austintown and punching an employee who asked to see his receipt. The blow knocked the employee’s glasses off. Judge Anthony D’Apolito of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court also ordered Lee to take part in an inpatient treatment program through the Community Corrections Association and serve three years of probation. The judge said he’s not sure of the timing of the lock-down treatment, which will address substance abuse and mental health.

Clark, who is accused of the offenses from 2014 to 2019, is in the Mahoning County jail. Clark is indicted on 12 rape counts, 10 of them carrying a possible prison sentence of life in prison. Two other rape counts carry a possible prison sentence of about 11 years. The gross sexual imposition charges could each result in prison sentences of 18 months to three years. Others indicted Thursday are: Michael D. Jagel, 34, of Redfern Drive, two counts aggravated drug possession with a specification of forfeiture of money in a drug case, carrying a concealed weapon and improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle; Vincent E.
