MCPS estimates 70% of staff has gotten COVID-19 vaccine Teachers expected to return to buildings in the fall June 3, 2021 | 9:51 am share this Montgomery County Public Schools officials last week estimated that at least 70% of its employees have gotten a COVID-19 vaccine. Others remain unvaccinated, despite an early push to offer a shot to all employees. During a school board meeting last week, MCPS Chief of Teaching, Learning and Schools Janet Wilson said an estimated 25% to 30% of the district’s 25,000 employees roughly 6,250 have not been vaccinated against COVID-19. Wilson did not give more information, but the number aligns with data MCPS provided to the state Department of Education in March that showed about 75% of district employees requested a vaccine.

Montgomery Co Council gives final approval to budget with eye toward pandemic recovery

One day before Montgomery County moves into Phase 3 of its COVID-19 plans, the Maryland county’s council approved a $6 billion budget that includes a number of items aimed at pandemic recovery. “It’s always difficult to put together a budget of this scale and complexity,” said Council President Tom Hucker. Referencing the pandemic, he added that the typical challenges were exacerbated by impacts of the coronavirus outbreak. “We’ve lived through the worst public health and economic crisis in a century.” The bulk of the county’s budget went toward education, with $2.7 billion dollars going to Montgomery County Public Schools. Another $312 million was allocated to Montgomery College.

But, McKnight said, every student who wants to be in a classroom in the fall “absolutely will.”
