Tupelo, Ms. Takes Direct Hit From Overnight Tornado Monday, May 3, 2021
This radar image captured shortly before 10 p.m. CDT Sunday, May 2, shows a tornado-warned thunderstorm tracking toward Tupelo, Ms. - photo by AccuWeather Nearly 100,000 Mississippi residents were under a tornado emergency on Sunday night, including the city of Tupelo, as a confirmed large and destructive tornado tore through the region. Left in the wake of the night s weather was damage strewn across three communities, inflicting destruction on buildings and downing power lines. Shortly before 10 p.m. CDT, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a dire warning for the city of Tupelo, calling the situation particularly dangerous and life threatening as a confirmed tornado charged toward the city.
The storm passed through Tupelo about 10 p.m. Entering from the southwest and going northeast, the storm caused extensive damage throughout the city. A Mississippi Department of Transportation camera captured a photo of the tornado near I-22 west of Veterans Boulevard.
There were reports of trees, power lines, fences and signs down throughout the city. Some of the damage occurred along Elvis Presley Drive in the east section. Roofs were destroyed on several houses and trees were knocked down across the street.
The tornado tore off part of the roof on Terrille and Chaquilla Pulliamâs home at 1818 Elvis Presley Drive.
