Gov. Whitmer Signs Correctional Officer Week Proclamation
Lansing, Mich.- Today Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued a proclamation declaring May 2 to May 8, 2021 as Correctional Officer Week in Michigan. This week, we recognize the thousands of corrections professionals in Michigan for their work and all that they do to keep inmates safe, Gov. Whitmer said. Thank you for your professionalism and service to our state.
There are more than 6,400 correctional officers serving in the state of Michigan. These corrections professionals maintain the safety of Michigan correctional facilities and ensure the health and well-being of those incarcerated, while also protecting Michigan communities.
Michigan adds 5,035 cases, 29 deaths from COVID-19
Michigan added 5,035 new cases and 29 deaths from the coronavirus on Monday, including cases from Sunday.
The latest figures bring the state s total number of cases to 849,420 and deaths to 17,771 since the virus was first detected in March 2020, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services.
The state continues to lead the nation in new cases per capita for the fifth straight week despite a third of its residents being fully vaccinated.
Last week, Michigan added 25,065 new cases and 454 deaths. Cases are decreasing while deaths rose. Deaths are a lagging indicator of cases and hospitalizations.

Michigan reported far fewer coronavirus cases in the week ending Sunday, adding 28,375 new cases. That s down 25.5% from the previous week s tally of 38,100 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Michigan ranked first among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 15.4% from the week before, with 344,463 cases reported. With 3% of the country s population, Michigan had 8.24% of the country s cases in the last week. Across the country, 16 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

The Michigan Parole Board has scheduled a public hearing for May 18 to consider the parole of a man convicted of killing an Oakland University student in a case that grabbed headlines across the country 25 years ago.
Kenneth Tranchida is serving a life sentence for second-degree murder-habitual fourth in the death of Tina Biggar in 1995, according to a release posted to Michigan.gov.
Described in the release as a drifter, Tranchida, then 42, was convicted of killing Biggar, a 23-year-old Oakland University student he met through a research project she was working on about prostitution and AIDS that was funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
