Milwaukee World Festival Inc., the group that oversees Summerfest, recorded a steep loss last year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The organization lost $8.1 million before depreciation and $17.4 million after depreciation, according to figures made public during an audit committee meeting Tuesday.
The audit showed support and revenue for 2020 was $384,017, which was less than 1% of the 2019 amount of $48,876,210.
The audit committee accepted and approved the financial report and recommended approval to the organization s board of directors, which meets Thursday.

A new playground is coming to one of Milwaukee’s most urban neighborhoods.
The non-profit Historic Third Ward Association is seeking to raise $85,000 to fund the neighborhood’s first playground.
The playground would be located in a triangular lot at 111 N. Jefferson St. that is currently owned by an affiliate of We Energies.
To be known as Gas Light Park, the site is located at the intersection of E. Erie St. and N. Jefferson St. It is currently a grass lot.
Festa Italiana in Milwaukee canceled for a second year due to COVID-19
A second major ethnic festival in Milwaukee has been called off for the second year in a row.
Festa Italiana will not take place again in 2021, the Italian Community Center Board of Directors announced in a press release Friday, due to ongoing complications from the coronavirus pandemic.
“COVID-19 has impacted virtually every business and industry across the country. Around the world festivals, sporting events, conferences, and community celebrations have been canceled, or postponed, due to lingering effects of this virus,” Joe Emanuele, president of the Italian Community Center and Festa director, said in a statement. “Unfortunately, Festa Italiana in Milwaukee is among the festivals that will have to wait until next year.”

The announcement extends a twenty-three-year relationship between the two organizations.
