LAHORE: Five students who had been leading the agitation against the holding of on-campus examinations in the city over the last two weeks were arrested in an early morning police raid on a house in Iqbal Town here on Thursday.
The raid was conducted by a heavily armed police team on the house of Sanaullah, a student activist, in Raza Block of Iqbal Town, picking the Progressive Students’ Collective (PSC) Lahore president Zubair Siddiqui, secretary general Ali Ashraf, information secretary Salman Sikandar, an activist Haris and the house owner.
Asks Saharanpur police to ensure safety of petitioners
Noting that it was duty bound to monitor the rights of the citizens under threat on account of their sexual orientation, the Allahabad High Court has directed police protection for a same-sex woman couple in Uttar Pradesh s Saharanpur.
The two women, aged 23 and 22, have been in a live-in relationship for a couple of years and are voluntarily living with each other on account of their sexual orientation, the court said. They are, however, facing resistance from their family members and had approached the High Court seeking directions to their families to not interfere in their relationship.

Islamabad: Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations Syed Mustafa Tanvir on Wednesday said efforts were afoot to make Islamabad the safest city as it was the foremost priority of the federal capital police.
A massive crackdown had been launched against anti-social elements and drug peddlers to purge this menace from the city, the SSP said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Islamabad Police has arrested 11 outlaws from various areas of the city and recovered narcotics and weapons from their possession.
The police stations falling under the jurisdiction of Industrial Area zone conducted special checking following the directions of SP Liaqat Hayat Niazi.

New Delhi, Jan 28 : After the tractor rally organised by the farmers unions on Republic Day turned violent in the national capital, the situation is tense at the Ghazipur border where security has been beefed up, while Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) spokesperson Rakesh Tikait too is looking under pressure.
The District Magistrate (DM) and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) are keeping a vigil on the situation.
The farmers sitting on protest at the Ghazipur border are also not certain about the future of the agitation, and many of them have started removing the tents. However, when asked why they are removing the tents, they said that it s cold there, so they are moving under the flyover.
