A Gloucester Sheriff’s deputy remains in stable condition after he was shot Monday while off duty and confronting a man breaking into vehicles in York County.
York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the 100 block of Leslie Lane in the Tabb Lakes subdivision for a report of a shooting just after 4 a.m. Monday, according to YPSO Information Officer Shelley Ward.
The YPSO said it appeared that someone was breaking into vehicles and a male homeowner, later identified only as an off-duty GSO deputy, confronted the person and was shot. The deputy was taken to a hospital where he remained in stable condition Tuesday.

Deputies are searching for Alexander Xavier Berkley of James City County. He is wanted for shooting a man.

JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WWBT) - Police say a man who is wanted after a shooting is considered âarmed and dangerousâ.
The York-Poquoson Sheriffâs Office says Alexander Xavier Berkley, 29, of James City County, is wanted for the shooting of a man that occurred on Dec. 26.
According to police, Berkley is wanted for:
3 counts in an attempt to Commit Non-Capital Offense
Shooting or Stabbing in Commission of a Felony
Possession of a Firearm by Convicted Felon

Residents in the Historic Triangle won’t be able to hold their cell phone while driving starting Jan. 1.
Come the new year, a new law goes into effect which prohibits people from holding their cell phone while driving and other personal communications devices.
Virginia had previously banned texting while driving, reading or responding to emails and using a cell phone in a work zone. Gov. Ralph Northam signed the new law, which started in July, but will now be reinforced in the new year.
Authorities: Off-duty deputy shot while confronting suspect

YORKTOWN, Va. (AP) An off-duty deputy was shot while he was confronting a person who was breaking into vehicles in Virginia, authorities said.
Deputies were notified early Monday morning about the shooting in Yorktown, the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office told WAVY-TV. The wounded deputy was from another jurisdiction and has been transported to a hospital in stable condition, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
The victim was a homeowner in the area, officials said, but it was not clear if the suspect was breaking into his vehicle.

One person has been arrested. The sheriff’s office is asking residents in the area to check their home video systems for any suspicious activity.
