CPS parent says she feels hopeless knowing her child will relocate

Cathy Chou said she worries her son will feel anxious when he leaves his classmates to attend Russell Boulevard. COLUMBIA - The Columbia Public Schools Board of Education voted on a plan to redistrict elementary schools over the next three years on Monday night. The final plan includes:  732 K-4 slated to move; Rising 5th graders will finish their 5th grade year at their current school; If moved in one phase of redistricting, will not be moved again; No islands of attendance areas; Siblings will not be separated; Takes effect next fall. District parent Cathy Chou spoke at Monday night s meeting. Chou asked the board to consider other plans for future building capacities.

Administrators solve traffic backups for second day of CPS summer school

COLUMBIA - Traffic backups near Mill Creek Elementary School have been solved after summer school began Monday.  Just even in one day there s been a huge improvement,  Russell Boulevard Elementary parent Jamie Blake said.  I know that educators are working really hard to try to get people out there very quick. They re very conscious of what s going on and I m really grateful that they re working so hard for us.   Two roundabouts were constructed on Nifong Boulevard at Sinclair Street and Old Mill Creek last year. According to the city of Columbia, the roundabouts were constructed to improve safety, reduce queue lengths and decrease travel times. 

Battle High School senior with autism will always remember prom

Blake, his date and his mom say it was memorable and fun. Blake is a senior at Battle, and he has autism. His mom, Lora Hinkel, said he enjoys dances anyway and going to prom is a milestone. Anytime he can do something inclusive with the rest of his peers, it s important, his mom said. April was Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month. Hinkel, a speech-language pathologist and learning specialist at Russell Boulevard Elementary School, posted about the prom on Facebook. Blake wore a tuxedo. It may not have been a traditional prom experience, but when he looked at me sideways and smiled when I told him how handsome he looked in his tuxedo, my heart melted,  his mom wrote in the post.
