Completion of new bridge for Rookwood Weir

JOINT STATEMENT The new bridge over the Fitzroy River has officially opened. The $12.5 million structure at Riverslea is the third road upgrade delivered as part of the $367.2 million Rookwood Weir project. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the Rookwood Weir project is supporting employment and economic development opportunities and will significantly increase water security for Central Queensland. “The Rookwood Weir is a great example of the Australian Government delivering the water infrastructure that will form the National Water Grid, our $3.5 billion investment to secure Australia’s water future.” Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning Steven Miles today officially opened the new bridge and handed its ownership over to Rockhampton Regional Council.

Miner drove through fence and into pole while on drugs

Premium Content An underground miner turned to illicit drugs after his best friend died by suicide. The miner drove a car while on drugs, crashing through a fence and into a pole. The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty on April 23 in Rockhampton Magistrates Court to breaching domestic violence orders, drug driving, wilful damage, stealing, drive without due care and attention, stealing fuel, attempted unlawful use of a motor vehicle, fail to appear in court and enter premises belonging to Rockhampton Regional Council and commit indictable offence by break and stealing. Police prosecutor Senior Constable Sarah Rowe said all the matters before the court showed the defendant committed acts of a wide varying nature.

More works completed to beautify popular lagoon

Premium Content Subscriber only Picnic tables and seating have been repainted at Springers Lagoon in Gracemere as part of an ongoing effort from Rockhampton Regional Council and its community partners to make the area as beautiful and inviting as it can be. Councillor for Parks, Sport and Public Spaces, Cherie Rutherford, said the recent works were carried out to make the natural waterhole a more attractive spot to stop and refresh. Cr Rutherford said the repainted picnic tables and seating were just a small addition to the impressive works carried out over the past few years. We are really proud of the improvements made to Springers Lagoon and it has been the result of a collaborative effort between council, the Queensland Government and our community partners, she said.
