A new study gives a clear glimpse into the life of the largest carnivorous dinosaur
Originally identified through fossil evidence from Egypt in 1915, the Spinosaur has become quite a star in the world of dinosaurs. A massive beast measuring up to 15 meters in length, it is considered to be the largest carnivorous dinosaur. This was artfully etched onto our collective imaginations in the 2001 film
Jurassic Park III as it defeated and devoured Tyrannosaurus Rex in an iconic battle.
Despite this fame, little was known about the biology and ecology of this giant until very recently. Many intact fossils were destroyed by Allied bombing during World War II, adding to the difficulty of studying what one of the authors called: “…a bizarre animal even by dinosaur standards, and unlike anything alive, today…” Based on available data it had been argued that this was an aquatic pursuit predator; using its massive tail to propel itself through the water to capture prey.

New research from Queen Mary University of London and the University of Maryland has reignited the debate around the behavior of the giant dinosaur Spinosaurus. Since its discovery in 1915, the biology and behavior of the enormous Spinosaurus has puzzled paleontologists worldwide. It was recently argued that the dinosaur was largely an aquatic predator, using its large tail to swim and actively pursue fish in the water.
The new study, published Tuesday in the journal Palaeontologia Electronica, challenges this recent view of Spinosaurus indicating it likely fed from the water, and suggests that it was like a giant heron or stork snatching at fish from the shoreline while also taking any other small available prey on land or in water.
Senior author, Professor Seif Shaheen from Queen Mary University of London, said:
“Asthma is the most common chronic condition in childhood and we currently don’t know how to prevent it. It is possible that a poor diet may increase the risk of developing asthma, but until now most studies have taken ‘snap-shots’, measuring diet and asthma over a short period of time. Instead, we measured diet and then followed up children over many years to see who developed asthma and who didn’t.
“Whilst we cannot say for certain that eating more fish will prevent asthma in children, based on our findings, it would nevertheless be sensible for children in the UK to consume more fish, as few currently achieve recommended intake.”
