Spring storms that sprang up in the past few days have gone a long way toward closing Austin s rainfall deficit and could help shore up water levels on Lake Travis.
Until only about a week ago, April was drier than normal, with a rainfall total nearly a half-inch below average. For the year, the city s rainfall was just shy of 6 inches, or about 2.8 inches below normal, according to National Weather Service data.
Austin s main weather station at Camp Mabry in April gets, on average, about 2.09 inches, but a series of soggy days and window-rattling nights delivered enough rainfall to put April s total this year nearly 1.5 inches above normal.
Austin s iconic Barton Springs Pool closed because of flooding, parks officials say
Flooding from heavy rainfall on Saturday has prompted Austin city officials to close the popular and iconic Barton Springs Pool on Sunday.
The closure comes not only after recent storms, but also just as sunshine is returning to Austin and temperatures could reach near 89 degrees. Monday also is likely to be sunny with a high near 93, the National Weather Service said.
The Austin Parks and Recreation Department said an announcement will be sent when Barton Springs Pool, near Barton Creek in Zilker Park, reopens.
Officials recommend calling the Barton Springs Pool hotline at 512-867-3080 or visitin AustinTexas.gov/ParkClosures for updated information.
More storms churning west of Austin area
Just hours after a massive wave of showers and thunderstorms swung through Central Texas on Saturday, Doppler radar at 9 p.m. showed another similarly organized but much smaller line of storms churning west of the Austin metro area.
Storms were training over Llano County, northeastern Gillespie County and northern Blanco County in the Hill Country west of Austin.
Training refers to how a series of storms can pass over the same area, much like a train passing over the same spot at a railroad crossing.
A flood advisory was in effect for Llano County until midnight, the National Weather Service said. Minor flooding is ongoing or expected to begin there and an additional 1 to 2 inches of rainfall was likely, forecasters said.
