Longford mum vows to do time rather than pay compensation to assault victim

A Longford mother of four has said she would rather go to jail than pay any compensation money to a woman she dragged back by the hair along the county town’s Main Street last year.
Claire Hishon (31), 5 O’Connor Park, Longford, delivered the ultimatum at a sitting of Longford District Court last week after she appeared charged with assaulting Gemma Kirwan at Main Street, Longford town on November 18 2020.
“I am not giving any more money to her,” she told Judge Hughes after Ms Hishon’s defence solicitor Frank Gearty said the row revolved around €150 which had been given to Ms Kirwan and not repaid.
Death threats made to four Longford gardaí during ‘volatile’ incident

A Longford man allegedly threatened to kill four gardaí while his daughter allegedly attacked two officers with a beer bottle and household ornament during the course of a violent row, a court has heard.
Darren Kelly (35) 67 Ardnacassa Avenue, Longford appeared at last week’s District Court sitting charged with four counts of threatening to kill gardaí David Conroy, Leo Shiel, John Fitzmaurice and Joe Kavanagh alongside a charge of resisting arrest following an incident on St Stephen’s Day last year.
His 18-year-old daughter Demi Kelly, of 17 Canal Green, Prospect Woods, Longford was also in attendance at last Tuesday’s weekly court sitting charged with two counts of assault and two counts of producing an article during the course of a dispute.

Two men who allegedly assaulted another man during a violent row in Edgeworthstown over two years ago are to be served with books of evidence.
Alan Whelan (26), 65 Gleann Riada, Strokestown Road, Longford and Eamon Stokes, 66 Gleann Riada, Strokestown Road, Longford were both charged following an alleged altercation at Pound Street, Edgeworthstown, Co Longford on January 7 2019.
Mr Whelan stands accused of carrying out a section 3 assault, being found in possession of a hatchet, dangerous driving and failing to offer assistance to an injured man while being the driver of car.

A Brazilian meat factory worker who was found at the wheel with an out of date driving licence was last week told by Judge Seamus Hughes to “bring a box of fillet steaks” with him when his case returns before the courts later this year.

Among them include endangerment, the production of a steel stick, assault and dangerous driving.
