SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Savannah City Council met on Thursday.
The Coastal Georgia has been recognized as a Great American Defense Community by the Association of Defense Communities.
The Coastal Georgia Military Affairs Commission announced the recognition at the city council meeting.
Their leadership in Chatham, Liberty and Bryan counties has helped develop community partnerships with the Army and other military services and provide for over 57,000 civilians and families along with 20,000 retirees living in our area.
Norma Thompson followed her husband to the United States from Panama and when the marriage failed a few years later, she was working odd jobs to support herself and her pre-school daughter when fate, destiny or something stepped in and changed her life.
âMy then-husband played baseball, and he got the chance to play in the minor leagues in Boston,â Thompson, now a Killeen resident, said. âBy then we had a child, so me and the child came to the U.S. in 1975.
âUnfortunately, that relationship didnât work. The values in this country are so different than at home â the loose values, I call them â and there was a divorce (1978). I didnât want to go back home; I saw bigger things here. An opportunity for me to take care of me. My family back home is very close, and somebody always thinks they need to help you. Do this for you; do that for you. I didnât want that. I wanted to stay here.

(KWTX) - Two decorated soldiers whose military careers intersected frequently over two decades of service in the U.S. and abroad including stops at Fort Hood, ended their careers on April 7 by picking up retirement papers together.
It was an emotional moment for First Sgt. Almasi Gill and Sgt. 1st Class Marcus Jones who began their military careers as teenagers and retired with nine deployments, seven children and a lifetime of stories between them.

The Georgia Southern University Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree program will officially launch on the Armstrong Campus in Savannah beginning in Fall 2021 as the program transitions to a hybrid format that combines the best of online and in-person instruction.
